A lift rarely fails without warning. It sends signals first, and they are easy to miss.
These are the main ones, and what each means.
Noise while it moves
Rubbing, clicking or squeaking on the way up or down usually points to wear in a mechanical part, or to a part that needs lubrication.
What starts mild grows with use. Do not wait.
Vibration or jerking
A healthy ride is smooth. If you feel shaking, or a jerk as the cabin stops, a moving part or a guide may be out of line. Ask for a technical check.
Uneven stops at the floor
If the cabin stops above or below the floor level, that is a risk for anyone stepping in or out, especially older people, wheelchair users and children.
This sign cannot wait.
Slow or sticking doors
Doors move more than any other part, so they cause the most trouble. Watch for:
- A delay in opening or closing.
- Needing a second try.
- A rubbing sound or shaking in the door's movement.
When a door fails, the whole lift stops.
Slower travel
If the lift takes longer between floors, the motor or the control system may be losing efficiency. It builds slowly, so it is easy to miss. Compare it with how the lift felt when it was new.
Codes or lights on the control panel
An error code or warning light that keeps coming back points to a fault in an internal system, even if the lift keeps running. Note the code and tell your maintenance technician.
When it needs a refit, not service
Service fixes faults. A refit deals with age and appearance.
Think about updating the cabin, doors or controls if:
- The cabin finish is old or damaged.
- The doors keep failing even after repair.
- Parts for the control system are hard to source.
- You want a new finish that suits your interior.
This does not mean the whole lift must be replaced. A site visit decides that. See modernising old lifts.
What to do now
- Do not ignore a sign that repeats.
- Do not try to repair the lift yourself.
- Ask for an early technical check. Early repair is safer and usually costs less.
- Put your maintenance under a contract, as in the annual maintenance contract article.
For a current fault, see repair and breakdowns.
Send us a photo or a description of the fault on WhatsApp, and we will set the next step.
